Soft tissue work: loosening what’s holding you tight

Muscles and fascia can lock a joint up just as much as the joint itself, this is how we address that side of the picture.

Joints don’t work in isolation, the muscles, tendons and fascia around them often tighten up in response to pain, overuse or poor posture, and that tightness can itself become a source of stiffness and discomfort. Soft tissue therapy targets that layer directly.

At IA Chiropractic this might look like trigger point pressure, myofascial release, deep tissue massage or gentle stretching, chosen based on what your muscles are actually doing rather than applied as a blanket routine. It’s frequently paired with Chiropractic adjustments, loosening the surrounding muscle often makes the joint work itself easier and the results longer-lasting.

It’s also useful on its own for people who want hands-on relief for muscular tension without spinal manipulation, including many presenting with neck pain or shoulder pain driven largely by muscle tightness.

Why patients choose it

Reduces muscle tension

Direct pressure and stretching techniques help tight, guarded muscles settle, easing the pull on nearby joints.

Improves local blood flow

Hands-on work to a restricted area can increase local circulation, supporting the tissue’s own recovery process.

Complements adjustments

Loosening the surrounding muscle often makes joint work easier to achieve and helps it hold for longer.

A gentler standalone option

Useful for people who want hands-on treatment for muscular tightness without spinal manipulation.

What a session looks like

  1. 1

We check in on how the area has felt since your last visit and identify which muscles are currently the priority.

  2. 2

You’ll be positioned so the target area is easy to access, often lying down, sometimes seated depending on the region.

  3. 3

Pressure is applied gradually and adjusted to your feedback, tender doesn’t have to mean painful, and you’re in control of intensity throughout.

  4. 4

We often move between soft tissue work and joint treatment in the same session, since the two influence each other.

  5. 5

You’ll be shown simple stretches to keep the muscle moving well between visits.

Is it safe? Is it for me?

Soft tissue therapy is a low-risk, hands-on treatment suited to most people, including those who prefer not to be adjusted. Some tenderness during or shortly after treatment is common, particularly over trigger points, and typically settles within a day.

It’s used cautiously or avoided over acute injuries, broken skin, recent surgery or suspected fractures, and your Chiropractor will screen for these during your assessment. As with any treatment here, you can ask for lighter pressure or to stop at any point.

Soft Tissue Therapy: your questions answered

Is soft tissue therapy the same as a remedial massage?
There’s overlap in the techniques, but soft tissue therapy here is applied as part of a Chiropractic assessment, targeted at muscles related to your specific complaint rather than a general full-body treatment, and often combined with joint work in the same visit.
Will it be painful?
Tight or trigger-point areas can feel tender under pressure, sometimes a "good hurt", but it shouldn’t be sharply painful. Pressure is adjusted to your feedback, and you can ask for it to be lighter at any time.
Can I have soft tissue therapy without an adjustment?
Yes. Some patients prefer hands-on muscle work without spinal manipulation, and that’s a perfectly reasonable choice, we’ll build a plan around it.
Will I be sore afterwards?
Mild soreness for a day or so is common, particularly after deeper work on tight areas, similar to how a firm massage can feel afterwards. It usually settles on its own.
