Neck pain relief built on a proper diagnosis, not guesswork
Neck pain rarely appears out of nowhere, it usually builds up quietly from posture, stress and old habits. We find out which of those apply to you.
Neck pain is easy to dismiss until it starts affecting your sleep, your focus at work, or your ability to check a blind spot without wincing. It’s also one of the conditions we see the most, alongside back pain, and the two share a lot of the same underlying drivers: stiff joints, overworked muscles, and hours spent in positions the neck was never designed to hold for long.
Most neck pain isn’t caused by anything sinister. It’s usually a combination of joint stiffness in the small vertebrae of the cervical spine, muscle tightness around the shoulders and base of the skull, and a nervous system that’s become a little too good at flagging normal movement as painful.
We start every new neck pain patient with a thorough assessment, checking how your neck moves, how it feels, and how it relates to your shoulders, upper back and daily habits, before recommending anything.
Common signs & symptoms
- A dull, constant ache across the back or side of the neck
- Sharp pain or “catching” when turning your head to check traffic
- Stiffness that’s worse first thing in the morning or after long drives
- Tension that spreads into the shoulders or between the shoulder blades
- Headaches that seem to start at the base of the skull, see cervicogenic headaches
- Reduced range of motion when looking up, down, or over your shoulder
- A grinding or clicking sensation with movement
What causes neck pain?
Joint stiffness — the small facet joints in the neck lose normal movement
often from sustained postures
Muscle tension — the trapezius and neck extensors work overtime to hold your head up all day
especially if it sits forward of your shoulders
Desk and screen posture — hours spent looking down at phones or screens loads the neck far more than most people realise ([work injuries](/conditions/work-injuries/))
Sleeping position — an unsupportive pillow or awkward sleeping posture can leave the neck locked up by morning
Old injuries — a previous neck injury or sporting knock can leave joints more sensitive to future strain
How we help at IA Chiropractic
We begin by ruling out anything that needs medical referral, then identify exactly which joints and muscles are contributing to your pain and why they’ve become irritated.
Treatment usually combines gentle Chiropractic adjustments to restore movement in stiff segments, soft tissue therapy to ease overworked muscles, and where appropriate, cupping for stubborn tension points.
If your desk setup or daily habits are feeding the problem, we’ll talk through practical ergonomic changes, not a generic handout, but changes that fit how you actually work.
